The member representing Atakunmosa East and West State Constituency, Honourable Sanmi Ebenezer Areoye has congratulated Nigerians on the celebration of 27 years of uninterrupted democracy in Nigeria.
In his Democracy Day message issued to journalists to commemorate the 2026 Democracy Day celebration, Hon. Sanmi Areoye recalled and acknowledged the efforts, sacrifices, patriotism and hardships endured by the heroes who fought for the enthronement of democratic governance in Nigeria, describing their contributions as historic, sacrificial and unparalleled.
Having acknowledged the efforts of these past heroes, Hon. Areoye observed that the nation continues to face serious challenges, including incessant insecurity, rising kidnapping cases, galloping inflation, disregard for the rule of law, misinterpretation of court pronouncements and the selective enforcement of conflicting judgments by state actors. According to him, these issues are making Nigeria's democracy increasingly fragile and weakened, thereby necessitating urgent action from the government and relevant stakeholders.
"It is deeply troubling when insecurity, such as kidnapping, undermines the very freedom and safety that democracy is meant to protect. My heart goes out to the families of those affected in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State and Ifedayo Local Government Area of Osun State as well as other parts of Nigeria. No community should have to endure such trauma," Hon. Areoye stated.
Hon. Areoye therefore called on indigenes and residents of Osun State to remain vigilant and promptly report any suspicious movements or activities to the appropriate authorities.
"Any politician or political party that threatens your peace, exploits fear or has links to banditry or kidnapping should be rejected at the ballot box," he added.
According to him, democracy works best when citizens are secure, enjoy freedom of movement and association, remain actively engaged in governance and refuse to surrender their security to individuals who do not respect the rule of law. He expressed strong optimism that Nigeria will overcome its current challenges and emerge stronger.
The Atakunmosa East and West State Constituency lawmaker urged residents of his constituency not to be intimidated by any perceived display of federal might before, during and after the August 15 Osun State Governorship Election. He reiterated the importance of supporting and voting for Governor Ademola Adeleke, stating that his re-election will open the door to greater opportunities and continued development for the people of Osun State.
He concluded his Democracy Day message by urging the people of Atakunmosa East and West to remain law-abiding citizens and assuring them that their votes would count.
