The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has signalled a strong push for grassroots-driven representation with the emergence of Hon. Abidemi Gbenga Ogunkanmi as its House of Representatives candidate for Aiyedire, Iwo, and Olaoluwa Federal Constituency.
Ogunkanmi’s candidacy, which followed extensive consultations and internal party processes, is being viewed within party circles as a strategic move to consolidate local support and strengthen ADC’s footing ahead of the general elections. His political journey, from serving as Chairman of Ayedire Local Government to representing Aiyedire State Constituency in the Osun State House of Assembly between 2019 and 2023, has positioned him as a familiar figure among constituents.
Stakeholders across the three local government areas have described his emergence as a reflection of the party’s commitment to experience and community connection. Many believe his understanding of local challenges gives him an edge in advocating effectively at the national level.
In his acceptance remarks, Ogunkanmi framed his ambition as a collective mission rather than a personal pursuit, emphasising the need for inclusive and responsive representation. He highlighted key groups, farmers, traders, artisans, students, and senior citizens, as central to his legislative focus, promising policies that address their everyday realities.
He also stressed that his campaign would prioritise issues over rhetoric, pledging to build unity within the constituency while mobilising support at the grassroots.
Beyond his own candidacy, Ogunkanmi used the opportunity to rally support for the ADC governorship flagbearer, Rt. Hon. Najeem Folasayo Salaam, ahead of the August 15 election. He described Salaam as a capable leader with the vision to drive development and improve governance in Osun State.
Calling for unity among party members and supporters, Ogunkanmi maintained that victory at the polls would depend on collective effort, discipline, and sustained engagement with the electorate.
